his pomegranate tree is located at a private residence on a low hill at about 30m above sea level in Nagasaki City's Ofunagura-machi, not far from Nagasaki Station. It is the only pomegranate tree among all the known bombed trees in the city.

If you face west from Mount Konpira (altitude: 366m), which lies to the eastern side of the Urakami district in Nagasaki City, you can find the low mountain locally known as Mount Gosha. The hillock stretching from Mount Gosha forms the boundaries of Ofunagura-machi, where this pomegranate is located. From the time of the bombing up to the present day this has been an area with a high concentration of housing, and it is estimated that there were around 1,700 residents in Ofunagura-machi during the war. This pomegranate tree stands around 2km south-southeast of the hypocenter and it was hit by heat rays and the blast wave, with the wooden houses collapsing and then being damaged by the fire that spread from around Nagasaki Station. The injured townspeople fled towards Mount Gosha to escape from the spreading fire, and it is said that many people spent the night outdoors there. Returning to the remains of their homes the next day, they found their town burnt beyond recognition and beyond belief.

The house where this pomegranate stands was destroyed by fire, and just one meter from the base of the burnt tree itself remained. However, new buds subsequently sprouted and two trunks grew as they continue to do this day. It is still possible to observe the charred black base of the tree that was burnt in the fires following the atomic bombing.

This old tree, around 100 years old, still bears the scars of the atomic bombing, but when autumn arrives it bursts into plentiful fruit and displays its tremendous vitality.
