This is the second of the two persimmon trees in the garden of a private residence in Nagasaki City's Ote-machi.
Persimmon fruit was a luxury product during the days of the war, and the skins and leaves were ground into powder to serve as a substitute food (replacing the staple food of rice). After the atomic bombing it was believed that the brewed leaves helped to treat injured people, and they were given a drink made by brewing the bitter persimmon leaves. It is quite possible that this very tree was part of that history.
Thought to be over two-hundred years-old, this persimmon still stands despite the damage caused by the atomic bombing.
