The Japanese white pine (goyomatsu) is a pine that is often used in garden trees and bonsai. While the leaves of most pines are in bundles of two, this variety produces bundles of five.

This Japanese white pine was originally planted as a garden tree, and along with the Rhododendron pulchrum at the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum came from the garden of Mr. Misao Ikeda. The tree was 17 years-old at the time of being exposed to the atomic bomb. Although it was hit by the heat rays of the atomic bomb it has subsequently thrived, and it is difficult to find any traces of the bombing.

The Japanese white pine was donated to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum in 1996 to commemorate its opening. Mr. Ikeda spoke at the time of his hope that "Many people will see this old tree that lived through the bombing and survived the war just like the hibakusha."
